Rhapsody in Colour: 38th Annual Members’ Exhibition + Art Sale returns to the Main and Haakonson Galleries at Harcourt House, inviting audiences to experience a dynamic convergence of visual art and music. Presented as part of Harcourt House’s celebrations of 120 years of abstract art (1906–2026), this year’s exhibition reflects on its enduring capacity to evoke emotion, movement, and resonance beyond representation. Artists working across all visual media respond to the exhibition theme by exploring the expressive potential of colour as sound, rhythm, and vibration.
Inspired by the pioneering ideas of Wassily Kandinsky and Hilma af Klint, alongside musical innovators like Alexander Scriabin, the exhibition considers the deep affinities between abstraction and musical composition. Much like a rhapsody – an expressive, free-flowing musical form – this exhibition embraces diverse interpretations, inviting works to engage with concepts such as harmony and dissonance, tonality and rhythm, and both intuitive and structured approaches to image-making. Whether through abstract or representational practices, participating artists are invited to reflect on how colour can “resound in the soul,” creating visual experiences that echo the emotional and sensory impact of music.
As an annual celebration of Harcourt House’s vibrant membership, the exhibition provides a platform for artists to exhibit and sell their work while contributing to the sustainability of the artist-run centre.
Organized and presented in conjunction with our ongoing commitment to supporting Harcourt House Artist Run Centre, this exhibition doubles as a fundraiser, with 30% of each artwork sold supporting Harcourt House’s exhibitions and art education programs, and 70% designated to the artists.
