Expressions of Métis Religion and Spirituality
Presented for Alberta Culture Days 2026
The Main Gallery
Opening Reception *: Friday, August 7, 2026, from 7 pm to 9:30 pm
Free admission
Six Métis artists, Arlo Henry, Christopher Savard, Jocelyn Lamothe, Krista Leddy, Kirsten Lindquist, and Maria Nelson, from the Métis Nation in Alberta, have come together to create an exhibition that represents the diverse identities and experiences of Métis religion and spirituality. Central to their research is the question of how historical legacies and contemporary influences shape Métis individuals’ engagement with traditional Indigenous spirituality and religion and the subsequent implications for cultural identity, resilience, and community well-being.
This body of work has evolved from and is formed by conversations with the artists and their connections to community, elders, researchers, and religious leaders. Their inquiry explores the varied expressions of Métis spirituality and religion within the Métis Homeland. Artists have been encouraged to explore their relationship to their own spirituality and how that has grown and been reshaped through different and unique traditions that have been inherited, learned, or rediscovered.
The work created represents the various artistic disciplines, including visual art, sculpture, and projection art.
