As an installation artist, Nicolas Fleming codifies commercial building materials into the domestic gallery space to create a distinctly unfinished aesthetic that envelops the viewer. By ennobling these constructive elements he produces a tension in our conceptual understandings of material culture and our behaviour toward it.
My work relies on construction materials and building techniques developed in daily work. I adapt construction site aesthetics to art-dedicated contexts. By diverting the primary functions of commercial building materials, especially drywall and plaster, I ennoble these materials and techniques, whether it be through sculpture, painting or large scale installation. Through a formal pursuit informed by art historical references, the propositions often result in a conceptual approach to material culture.– Nicolas Fleming
