Working from photographs, students will be led through how to create an impressionistic landscape in soft pastel. Utilizing demonstrations and hands on practice, the student will learn the basic tools and techniques of the medium as well as how to use composition and lighting to produce exciting pastel paintings. Students may use their own photographs or ones provided by the instructor. This is a beginner workshop and no prior art experience is required. A list of supplies will be provided prior to the workshop.
Instructor’s Bio
Catharine Compston received her art training at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary. She works mainly in soft pastel and oils, and her artistic practice also includes regular life drawing sessions at Harcourt House in Edmonton.
Her pastel landscapes were shown in an exhibition at the McMullen Gallery in 2012 (New Terrain: Landscapes in Pastel by David Shkolny, Judy Martin and Catharine Compston). A solo show in 2017 at the Naess gallery included her oils of figures in motion (Movement and Stillness: the Figure in Oils; May-July 2017). She has illustrated a backcountry hiking cookbook (Recipes for Roaming: Adventure Foods for the Canadian Rockies-1996) and completed cover illustrations for three children’s’ books by Alberta author Gwen Molnar (2016).
Her pastel paintings have found their way to eastern and western Canada, the U.S., Germany, Switzerland, and England. She has shown her work at Bay 12 Gallery, Art Walk on Whyte, group shows at VASA and the St Albert Painters Guild, and in Harcourt House’s annual Members and Naked Shows.
