In this next instalment of the Drawing with Expression series, participants will explore how to use charcoal to create convincing depth and volumetric form while keeping an expressive, intuitive approach to drawing.
This session will focus on:
- Building volume through light and shadow
- Using cross-hatching, tonal layering, and blending to shape form
- Creating depth through value gradation and atmospheric contrast
- Strengthening gesture and mark-making to give drawings energy and structure
- Understanding how charcoal can describe weight, curves, and spatial relationships without relying on strict realism
Through a series of guided exercises, students will practice shaping forms, enhancing three-dimensionality, and developing stronger control of tone, edges, and expressive marks.
Drawing with Expression III is suitable for beginners and returning participants alike. You don’t need to have attended Drawing with Expression I or II to enjoy/benefit from this workshop.
