Harcourt House Artist Run Centre is back this summer with another Week O’ Workshops! This time, we are focusing on narrative. Each of these workshops will show you how to tell a story in a new and creative way. All workshops are FREE and will take place in the gallery on the third floor – bring your pals and get your creative juices flowing!
July 19: Zine Workshop with Jill Stanton
5 pm – 7:30 pm, led by Jill Stanton
Want to learn how to make mini zines or comix out of a single sheet of paper and a staple? Come with your great ideas and Jill Stanton (Harcourt House’s current Artist-in-Residence) will help you with comics format including panels, rhythm, and incorporating text with images! Even if you’re not too sure what you want your zine to be about, come anyways and bring some pals!
July 20: Stop Motion Animation
1 pm – 4pm, led by Halie Finney
Learn how to do stop motion – an animation technique where objects are moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when played in sequence. It’s easier than you think!
The animations created at this workshop will be mixed into cartoon classics at our Saturday Morning Cartoon event- make sure you come back on Saturday to see them on the big screen!
July 21: GIF Workshop
6 pm – 8 pm, led by Claire Bailey
Complementing our narrative theme, this workshop will show you how to make narratives that endlessly repeat with both video and drawing-based GIFs!
NOTE: We will be using photoshop for this workshop and have a limited number of computers for participants to use. If you have photoshop on your laptop, please bring it along! If you have a laptop but no photoshop, you can download a 30-day free trial of photoshop to use at our workshop here:https://
July 21: Zine Distribution Workshop
12 pm – 1 pm, led by Amy Leigh
Join us for a lunch hour workshop on zine distribution. We will cover the basics on working with distros and zine libraries, tabling at zine events, submitting to publications for review and more! Gather tips and tricks on promoting your work and sharing it with the world. This workshop is free and open to anyone – especially if you have never made a zine before!
Amy Leigh is a Toronto-born artist, educator, and agitator. Since 2004 she has been running twelveohtwo, a tabling-mostly distro that carries zines with a strong focus on personal narrative writing by women, queers, trans, non-binary folks, and people of colour.
July 22: Comic Workshop with Happy Harbour Comics
1 pm – 5 pm, led by Happy Habor Comics
Want to make comics but aren’t quite sure how to tell your story through the medium? Learn some tips about panel design, page layout, and lettering that will help evolve your storytelling and allow you to make great comics!
